A Message from the Dean

Science and Engineering is an academic discipline that cultivates logical thinking and systematic approaches to unravel the wonders of nature, as well as to create new substances and mechanisms that do not exist in nature. We are able to live a convenient life thanks to various electronic information devices. Do you know that the car navigation system utilizes Einstein's theory of relativity? We use satellites to specify current locations on Earth, but in order to specify locations down to an accuracy of one meter, corrections based on the theory of relativity are indispensable. Encryption technology, which is used to ensure confidentiality of information on the Internet or to prevent tampering, adopts the number theory in mathematics, such as prime factorization algorithms for encryption. Today, discoveries in basic science are immediately applied to practical problems, whereas state-of-the-art technology pushes the boundaries to create new scientific fields.

The Graduate School of Science and Engineering at Tokyo Metropolitan University consists of four basic science departments – Mathematicas and Information Sciences, Physics, Chemistry, and Biological Sciences, and two core engineering departments – Electrical and Electronic Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. Together, we have taken on the challenge of resolving diverse scientific and technological issues of the 21st century. In addition, the Graduate School of Science and Engineering is directly linked to the six undergraduate courses in the School of Science and Engineering, which allows us to provide students with in-depth and sequential education from undergraduate to graduate (doctorate program) levels as well as high-quality professional research.

The Graduate School of Science and Engineering and the School of Science and Engineering conduct cutting-edge research that fosters dynamic teaching and research activities. We hope that those of you who will represent the next generation will learn with us.

School of Science and Engineering

What characterizes education offered in the School of Science and Engineering is that each course places emphasis on research proposed independently by students. For example, in "Independent Research in Biology" in the Biological Sciences course, which can be taken any time from the first year, students organize their own research group to determine the research theme, design protocols, conduct experiments, and present study results while receiving guidance from faculty advisers. In "Electrical and Electronic Project" offered to third-year students of the Electrical and Electronic Engineering course, students are encouraged to work on a theme they choose for themselves (autonomous vehicle production, ultrasound biological image system production, etc.) as we place importance on students' independent innovation and participation. At Tokyo Metropolitan University School of Science and Engineering, all faculty members conduct advanced research in science and technology and collaborations between science and engineering are highly anticipated, given its predominance as a School of Science and Engineering. The 21st century is an era where scientific discoveries can be immediately put into practical application and the creation of new scientific fields with advanced technology has become a reality. In the School of Science and Engineering, our objective is to help students gain a profound understanding and knowledge of natural science and scientific technology, as well as acquire logical thinking and approaches. To this end, we offer methodically planned education over the course of four years with value given to fundamentals and foundations. By cultivating students’ problem-solving skills, we hope to produce individuals with a broad perspective and the ability to properly address issues and situations in the society with science and engineering as the backbone. In the fields of science and engineering, students are expected to approach their course work with the expectation of continuing on to graduate school after four years of undergraduate education In the School of Science and Engineering, more than 70 % of the students go on to graduate school. Each course features curriculum that is designed to be completed in the four-year undergraduate program. In addition, we also offer a sequential undergraduate/master’s program, including an early graduation system that allows students to graduate in three years.
